28mm Modern/Sci-Fi Medium Duty Truck Conversion

This is a conversion Adeptus-B made a number of years ago for a Dark Heresy encounter.

It is primarily made from the back half of an Ork War Trakk and the cab of an Imperial Guard Sentinel.

Dark Heresy Vehicles Showcase

Earlier this month I posted an in progress update on some Rogue Trader era Space marine models titled, Dark Heresy Vehicles WIP. In this post I have the finished models.

This is the first version of the Space Marine bike. As mentioned in the previous post, this has been lightly converted with a new handlebar and saddlebags.

These three Imperial Jet Bikes were used by the Imperial Guard as well as the Space Marines in 1st edition Warhammer 40k. They were phased out around 2nd edition. I chose to paint them in a neutral color and in the same color with the plan to use them as the vehicles for a variety of unified groups--Such as local enforcers, or an organized gang.

Dark Heresy Vehicles WIP

Today we have a short photo bomb of some quick and dirty vehicles for our Dark Heresy campaign.

This is a Rogue Trader era Space Marine bike. I lost the original handlebars so an Ork Mek was gracious enough to loan a pair, but I chose to make one out of an old IG tank smoke launcher. There are a set of metal and resin stowage from my bitz box added to the back of the bike.

A trio of Rogue Trader era Space Marine jet bikes. No modifications to the figures, but I did make the bike bases.

Arbites (counts-as) Rhino Showcase

I started this project a little over 4 years ago and it is finally finished!! I am very pleased with the results!

All three vehicles are identically equipped with a hull mounted storm bolter, a pintle-mounted storm bolter, a spot light, smoke launchers, and a tow hitch.

These models are intended to be used as Rhinos in 40K, Dark Heresy, and Necromunda. But I suppose if pressed, they might make suitable Chimeras for IG Veteran squads.

I am still uncertain about line-edge paint style. I am happy with the results, but just unsure if it is the style for this project.

I thought about trying out some weathering pigments, but could not get myself to use this project as a guinea pig on my first attempt.

Let me know what you think. To catch up on the entire project check out these posts:

Jade's Furry

Here is a ship I designed for my Eberron campaign...

In Eberron, low-level magic is very common and has enveloped every day living, from city street lamps to a continent wide "lightning" train. This ship is one such magical powered vessel.

Instead of sails, airships have a fire elemental bound to it. A ring of fire surrounds the ship and the pilot "controls" the elemental in order to maneuver the ship.

I designed this ship with the expectation that my players would eventually take control of it. So I deliberately included elements that would be helpful and others less desirable. That said, I expected the players would modify it at some point.

Eberron Vehicles

Here are 2 vehicles I scratch built for my Eberron campaign.

ELEMENTAL LAND CART

This is essentially a wagon with a bound earth elemental. In hind sight, I wish I had built a more traditional wagon out of balsa wood, and then wrapped it in stone. However, this certainly is a serviceable piece. The cargo bed can fit 8 medium sized humanoids (ie 20mm square bases), plus a driver on the bench.

ELEMENTAL POWERED SKIFF

In Eberron, in addition to sailing ships, they have airships. The airships fly under the power of a bound fire (or air) elemental.

My players managed to acquire their own airship. (I will post a map in the near future) They would often leave the it a short distance from their destination, taking the skiff the last bit. Having a model of the skiff was going to be convenient.

This skiff (or raft) is a WIP, belonging to a much larger vessel. This model can fit ten 20mm bases on the deck.

We ended the campaign soon after the players took control of the airship, so this piece never got finished. It was only used for 1 or 2 sessions. The players occasionally show interest in returning to the campaign. One idea is to have the characters retire from adventuring and "set sail" on a new chapter. The characters were around 12th level and it would be nice to take them up to around 15th level.

Wagons Ho!

Here are some pics of Wagons (and a chariot) that were painted for my Dungeons and Dragons campaigns that ran from '99-'08. Some of the models were purchased specifically for the campaign, and others were already owned.

You will notice an old (20-25 years old) GW Skeleton in most of the pics. I'm not really sure why I put him in these shots as these models don't really need it. But I took these pics on the same day as a series of elemental and giant pics, where the skeleton really did help illustrate scale.

---

STAGECOACH

This is a GW Vampire Counts Black Coach that I bought specifically for using as a standard coach. The players started using stagecoaches as their primary mode of long distance travel. We ended up having many encounters in town and on the road centered around coach travel. So I picked up this model. The "conversion" was walling off the back of the coach, swapping skelly driver and horses for health counterparts, adding interior detail by carving passenger seats out of foam, and adding baggage to the roof.

This model was one of my first attempts at modeling a "road", or worn spot in the grassy earth. In hind sight its not very successful. My basing technique at the time was a step up from the previous process, but only a little. Prior to this, I only used one color on the sand covered base (either green or brown). While I am using green and brown, picking out some rocks, and dropping in a bit of flock, it just isn't natural looking.

WAGONS & CARTS

Here we have 3 carts, all from GW. The one on the left was bought for the campaign. No mods on that one!

The middle cart was bought in the late '80. I had a Halfling Merchant in a WHFRP campaign and I needed a pony, so I picked up this mini. The cart had been build on a separate base with a bent wire around the shafts so that the wagon could attach to the horse.  It was great that the pony and cart were separate, but I found it cumbersome to use on the table. Wen I repainted them for this campaign, I also put them on the same base.

The third cart was one I picked up on a special mail order deal, back when the catalog was mailed to you and was a black and white folding poster!! I do not recall if this cart came with horses or if they were repurposed. I used horses I got from an inexpensive farm animal play set.

ORC CHARIOT

This is an old Grenadier Orc Chariot set I bought in the early '80s. I had used this figure in my early WHFB games. It has gone through 3-4 paint jobs over the years and in all the variations, I always kept the wolves separate. In this latest incarnation, I used a movement tray to allow the wolves and chariot to me moved as one piece. you can see the difference in the basing techniques on the wolves compared to the chariot.

The driver came with the original box set, as did the orc in the rear (I think). I do not recall the company or era of the middle orc.

Here is a shot showing the wolves removed. The banner poles lost both the tips over the years. I replaced them with bits from a GW plastic Skeleton sprue.

Modern/Sci-Fi Vehicles Showcase (pic heavy)

Here are some pics of vehicles I painted for use in our Dark Heresy campaign. The motorcycle is an old Shadowrun figure (date and manufacturer unknown, but lets say in the neighborhood of 20 years old) and the car is a recently purchased WWII commander's car plastic model.

I specifically bought and painted the car for our Dark Heresy acolyte's--It was a loner from the local government during one of our missions. The only addition to this model is the hood ornament, which is from a Space Marine Commander's backpack.

The bike will eventually be part of a rag-tag Rough Riders unit for my "Trow everything we have left" Planetary Defense Force (counts as Imperial Guard), previously discussed here and here. But we needed a bike during the same mission as the commandeered car, so I moved it to the front of the production line! The model's original handlebars were terribly thin and about to break off, so I replaced them with a pair of bars from a Space Marine Bike and added a pair of Space Marine Magnoculars as the headlights.

The bike's base terrain as is the base it self, are scratch built. The base is two 25mm square bases sandwiched between two halves of a 25mm round base. I used bits from my collection comprising of chunks of sprue, model bricks, and old 1:35 car model bitz.

I really like how these turned out. The car is very basic but it fits the role needed, and the bike will look great in the Rough Riders unit!

This is an old Tonka toy van I had when I was a kid (I keep lots of stuff like this). We needed another vehicle during the same mission as the vehicles above, so I "pimped" up this ride.

I had originally painted it about 20 years ago is a similar cammo scheme, but it had external gun pods mounted on both sides made from bitz from an old Transformer toy. I never liked how they looked, so they were removed with this overhaul. I kept a detail over the rear tires, taken from an old car model as well as the domed sun-roof.

The original rear doors molded on the toy were very crude, so I replaced them with a pair of Rhino mk1 armor plates and added plasticard hinges.

I hope you enjoyed the pics. Comments always welcome! Thanks!

Arvus Lighter WIP part 3

Slowly making progress on my scratch built Arvus Lighter. Here is a pic in it's current state. I am about 3/4th done with the line highlighting. I am considering adding a wash of dark blue-grey before I attempt my first go at weathering powders.

I want to add some chipping to the paint before the weathering process by paining the chipped areas black and then dab those area with silver.

Here are the two main components of the Arvus--A Lego Technic container and A Batman Happy Meal toy. I have two more of each with the original intent to make two more Arvus Lighters. But the time and (pricey) bits used to make this one, I will probably find other uses for them.

As always questions and comments are welcome! If you want to see the previous posts about this project check out:

Arvus Lighter WIP part 2

Here is an pic update on this project. Mostly adding detail and bits.

Originally, I planed on the back hatch being surface detail, but I have committed to making a magnetized door that will drop down as a ramp.

Comments appreciated!

Arvus Lighter WIP

Here is a shot of a WIP "scratch built" Arvus Lighter that has been sitting untouched on my "to do" shelf for over 2 years (the body has been in my blitz box for over 6!). Admittedly this isn't an exact match to the Forge World model. I am basing this project off Googled images and the body and cock pit used for the basis of the model.

The cockpit is a Lego Batman Happy Meal toy boat. The body is a Lego pre-Bionicle Technic robot container. The rest of the parts are miscellaneous bitz, plasticard and foamcore. I did purpose by the nacelles, landing gear (not shown), and other Valkyrie bitz for this project.

I have two more Lego boxes and Batman toys, with the intent to eventually make two more Lighters, but I will have to source more nacelles and landing gear--Assuming this project is a success!

Ideally, this vehicle will be put into immediate service of the Ordo Hereticus by our Dark Heresy acolytes. It's eventual and primary mission will be attached to my rag-tag Imperial Guard force.

List Building: Imperial Guard

I have always wanted to make a rag-tag, or eclectic looking IG army. I was never sure quite how to do it (or when I would so), but I have been collecting the models for 15+ years. As evidence, here are a few pics...

The root of the inspiration is the last ditch effort to defend an outpost or some other important location. I envision the force to be comprised of the local enforcers/arbites, remnants of planetary reserves, desperados,  prisoners, conscripts, special forces, kill teams, and elements of the local administratum. Because of our Dark Heresy campaign, I only recently thought about including an inquisitor and/or rogue trader-- either a counts-as company command squad, or an additional inquisitor ally squad.

This is not meant to be any sort of competitive tournament list, just a casual fun list. Except for the 2 chimeras, I have everything listed. The Arvus Lighter is a scratch build project, primarily for use in Dark Heresy.
