As I have mentioned before, I started playing 40K back in Rogue Trader days--The year it came out in the US actually. I think I played a friend's Ork army in my first game. Soon after, I started collecting my own figures.

Back then for $20 you could buy a boxed set of 30 Space Marines, a boxed set of 3 Rhinos, or a boxed set of 2 Land Raiders! That was $60 for an entire army !! Yeah, yeah, inflation you say. According to DollarTimes inflation calculator, $60 in 1987 is equivalent to $124.67 in 2013. Just for giggles, let's do a comparison. In 1987 I paid $125 (in 2013 dollars). For that, I got 30 Tactical Marines, 3 Rhinos and 2 Land Raiders. Today those models will run you... $380.25!

Over the years, I have painted a fair amount of Aquamarines-- Models pained in different styles and different levels of proficiency. Every time I got back in the hobby and started painting, much of my efforts were spent in re-painting and reorganizing models to the current codex. Still, I never managed to get a large force painted.

A long time ago, I made a rule for myself. The intention was to not assemble figures until I was ready to paint them... something I have mostly kept true. However, I have never given myself a restriction to buying models--There are only external limits like my pocket book and my wife.

My most recent attempt at reviving the Aquamarines (around 2009), was creating banner art in CorelDraw, and then adding a painterly-style shading in Photoshop. I finished the Squad banners and most of the character banners, but the chapter banner was left incomplete.

Chapter Banner WiP

At the moment, I am still unable to field a cohesive and painted force. This post is the first step in achieving that goal. I am taking a que from Admiral Drax by creating a spread sheet (I love spreadsheets!) of all the models and plotting the stage that each one is in.
They are Zerglings from Star Craft. There were 9 of them in the pack as well as 9 Terran Marines. Not yet sure what I will do with the marines--But I have some ideas. The marines are quite large, about the height of a T'au Crisis Battlesuit, but bulkier.
All my big guys go on 40mm, but he seemed a bit too narrow.
The previous two attempts were slapping on a Rogue Trader era metal Space Marine chain sword in the right hand of a 2e Blood Bowl catcher and thrower respectively.

This *is* the 2e Blood Bowl thrower used in my second attempt. But this time I have used a Meiko Miniatures arm + Chainsaw. I had to carve away quite a bit of metal on the thrower's shoulder, knee and chest as well as some elements on the chainsaw's reverse side to get the arm/chainsaw to fit the way I wanted.

To make him even more different than his twin brethren thrower, I shaved off the Mohawk on the helmet and added a wire face guard.Zorconhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08223002363738913215noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5064969427327856921.post-25024064002261558602017-10-31T12:00:00.001-07:002017-10-31T12:00:30.290-07:0040k StatueToday we have a repurposing of a very old miniature--A Rogue Trader era Marneus Calgar, Ultramarine Commander.

At one point, I had attempted (and failed) to convert Calgar to an Assault Marine leader. This unfinished conversion left poor Calgar without a right leg, leaving me to convert him back to his original pose.

I have glued Marneus, his bolter rack, and his cloak/helmet stand onto a Coke bottle cap. Which was then glued to a 40mm base, and finally on a larger bottle cap. Three metal shields were affixed to the lower bottle cap at 9, 12, and 3 o'clock.
These last 8 years have been a journey. Real Life™ has kicked my butt a number of times over the last 14 years and I have had to back burner this blog. At the pace I try to maintain, I would have hit 400 posts in only 4 years. That said, I am very proud of this accomplishment. Heck, averaging 50 posts a year ain't bad.

But wait, there's more! I have a small showcase to share--A group of WHFB Wood Elves Glade Guard Winged Fey Forest Creatures, given to me by Lord Grimskull. Whew, what a mouthful.
I don't have a WHFB/AoS Wood Elves army but I figured they could see the battlefield as Dark Heresy alien creatures, Necromunda mutated animals, or even as a stand-in for a small flying creature in D&D. With that in mind, I chose blue-green colors on the figure and a complimentary neutral base color. The figures are based on 20mm MDF round bases.
These three Imperial Jet Bikes were used by the Imperial Guard as well as the Space Marines in 1st edition Warhammer 40k. They were phased out around 2nd edition. I chose to paint them in a neutral color and in the same color with the plan to use them as the vehicles for a variety of unified groups--Such as local enforcers, or an organized gang.
It has become clear to me how important it is to have skills somehow marked on on the players.

My Blood Bowl figures are clearly numbered and their positions identified with a color ring around the base. I recently started using small colored rubber bands to mark specific skills on players. Even so, both myself and my opponents have occasionally been confusion and made mistakes.

In a few days, I will be participating in an all human league where we draft experienced (with randomized star player points and advancements. With that, keeping track of which player has which skill will be imperative.

For these issues mentioned above, I began looking for solutions. There are a number of skill ring options on the market, as well as some new offerings. However, for me those options were either too expensive, too cumbersome, or unattractive.

So I came up with this idea. Here is the first test. I glued a magnet to a Warmahorde base slightly larger than the player's base. Then I marked off segments according to how many skills the player had.

I really liked how it looked and completed the entire team. Because the magnets on the player's base are not uniformly placed, these skill rings are not universal.

This is a Rogue Trader era Space Marine bike. I lost the original handlebars so an Ork Mek was gracious enough to loan a pair, but I chose to make one out of an old IG tank smoke launcher. There are a set of metal and resin stowage from my bitz box added to the back of the bike.
This team was originally purchased and painted in the late 80s. Back then, all of my teams were named and painted like the famous teams in the fluff. This team was no exception--The Greenfield Grasshuggers. However, I now prefer to name my teams after NFL teams in homage to second edition Blood Bowl.

In this go around, in addition to renaming the team and creating a team logo, I touched up the paint, added back number plates, added glossy elements, re-did the bases, and painted a colored ring around the base lip. There are no Star Players represented here. All of my Star Players are painted differently than team colors.

Since I was not planning on re-painting the team in its entirety, I was limited on which NFL team to base the halflings on. I knew immediately I would base this team off of the Green Bay Packers. Instead of searching the Warhammer Old World map for an appropriate halfling city (are there any? :) ). I eventually chose a suitably sounding halfling community name--Greenhaven.
My favorite thing after tables. Well, these probably aren't actually my 2 favorite things, but I am quite fond of charts and tables. This progress chart is based of the progress chart invented by Admiral Drax, patent pending

This chart represents the status of every model in my Blood Bowl collection. I have made some progress in the last few months since my last update. Four teams painted, a new team converted, a handful of Star Players painted, and a fifth team painted to tabletop standard.

I finally renamed my last three famous teams in the Blood Bowl fluff. The Reikland Reavers, Darkside Cowboys, and Orcland Raiders became the Helmgart Broncos, Dargoth Cowboys, and Mount Gunbad Raiders respectively. Team logs have been added. I have also added a status indicator for each team (see below).

There are 4 main sections to this chart. The first one on the top is a list of future teams names (and colors), and their 'real' world inspiration. The next one on the bottom left shows my Star Player uniform colors. The bottom middle section indicates the color of ring I paint on the base lip of the models. Finally, the bottom right section is a legend for the previous chart.Zorconhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08223002363738913215noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5064969427327856921.post-67553299185949278782017-10-07T12:00:00.007-07:002017-10-13T21:01:26.380-07:00Helmgart Broncos WIP pt 2Here is a little progress report on the human team. I normally use black primer, although lately I have been experimenting with colored primer. But for this project, I went with with to ensure a really nice orange. Unfortunately I have realized its time to replace my base orange. It is Blazing Orange from quite a few generations of paint lines. I think from the first line after Coat d'arms stopped making Citadel's paints. It hasn't dried out, at least not entirely. But it has become very translucent.

Anyway, I have started to lay down the blue. After that, will be skin tones and then touch-ups. Then washes. Here is a list of the paints I am using in this project.
It has been well over 10 years since I stripped any paint off of a miniature. I tend to just repaint them--Over previous pant jobs, clear cote and primer. But this time, I wanted to put that extra bit of effort. I used the last bit of unused model paint stripper left over from the early 90s.
I will be painting this team following the the above patterns, but with colors closer to that of the Denver Broncos.Zorconhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08223002363738913215noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5064969427327856921.post-52522006521022950572017-10-01T12:00:00.000-07:002017-10-06T11:14:53.865-07:00Dargoth Cowboys Showcase

This team was originally purchased and painted in the late 80s. Back then, all of my teams were named and painted like the famous teams in the fluff. This team was no exception--The Darkside Cowboys.

Since I was not planning on re-painting the team in its entirety, I was limited on which NFL team to base the Dark Elves on. I took creative liscense here as I decided to keep the Cowboys team name and searched the Warhammer Old World map for an appropriate Dark Elven city. I eventually chose the watch tower Dargoth on the continent of Naggaroth.
Dargoth and its sister Watchtowers are the size of a city, built to keep the hordes of Chaos that roam the frozen wastelands to the north at bay, and provisioned to withstand years of siege and garrisoned with a great host of Naggaroth's foremost warriors.
This is another attempt to modernize and improve game play with minimal effort.Zorconhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08223002363738913215noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5064969427327856921.post-19077672642800111792017-09-28T12:00:00.000-07:002017-10-16T10:26:26.560-07:00d20 Zombie ApocalypseI am working on a zombie Apocalypse campaign called the M-Virus Incident for my son. This campaign uses the d20 Modern Core Rulebook as its foundation, additional rules I cherry picked from a variety of other sources, and specific rules I wrote for this campaign. If you are not familiar with the d20 Modern system, it is an offshoot of D&D 3/3.5 and shares the same basic rules set. However, d20 Modern adds more than it subtracts from it predecessor.

The M-Virus Incident is set in your home town during a bleak Zombie themed Post Apocalypse that takes place in the mid 2000's. The players (PCs) are members of a group of survivors. They have been together in a somewhat safe location for about 2 weeks. Some of them knew each other before the 'Incident”, some have joined the group more recently. Supplies are getting low and the survivors have to go out for a scavenging run sooner than later. But wait, someone hear something...

At low levels of the campaign the players should feel like they are in a horror film—A single zombie will fill the players with fear and be very difficult to stop. Then during mid levels, the campaign should feel more like an action thriller—The players begin to chase down zombies and have conflict with other groups as packs of civilization begins to creep up. Finally, at high levels, it is a full apocalypse as hordes of zombies destroy everything in its path and wars break out between different settlements.

The standard d20 Modern occupation/class system is used, but many of the character creation steps are omitted, changed, or added. For example the wealth system is completely overhauled to represent hastily prepared equipment. Some of the big addition that really ad a horror vibe are permanent damage, insanity, and the biggest impact, multiple levels of fatigue (from lack of sleeping, eating, drinking, excessive damage, the environment, and illness).

Zombies are overhauled. They cause fear and they can't be killed by damage alone--Players will need to use called shots to put a zombie down permanently. I am also adding my most favorite thing ever--Tables!! But seriously, yes, there are pages and pages of tables for generating random equipment, food, weapons, occupations, encounters, insanities, traits, flaws, disorders, and injuries.

There is a unique set of features that I think is going to really help set the tone. At character generation, players determine a number of associates. They make note of the following:

Choose d3+3 associates. They can be family, lovers, friends, enemies, co-workers, acquaintances, etc.; They can be on good or bad terms with you. For each associate, provide the GM with their Name, Gender, Age, Occupation, and describe your relation/disposition with you. When the campaign starts, d6-3 of your associates will be with you. The remaining associates are given to the GM where their fate may or may not be discovered as the campaign unfolds.

also...

The player's characters and their associates aren't the only ones in the team. There are d3+3 additional group members. The GM will determine their vital statistics, equipment (d6 random items), and relations with each other.

As the campaign unfolds, players will have their attentions and allegiances split between party members and NPC loved ones. Additionally, when a PC dies that players takes over one of the other group members (either a loved one or on of the additional group members.

This is still very much a work in progress, and I will periodically post updates here.Zorconhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08223002363738913215noreply@blogger.com0
