Cryx Army WIP Photo Bomb 1

Besides a recent post about Objective Markers, I haven't posted anything for my Cryx army in about 3 years. So I am just going to photo bomb my progress to date.

Cryx Objectives WIP

Here is a quick blurb of my Cryx objectives. Most of the bits used are from GW, but there are some bits from other companies, like Pagasus, Imex, and Perry Miniatures to name a few. Since there are no Warmachine bits, I am a little concerned with the legality of these pieces if I ever play in an official tournament,

From left to right: Stockpile, Fuel Cache, Bunker, Flag, Arcane Wonder, Flag, Armory.

These were fun and very satisfying to convert up. I am looking forward to finish painting them. Now I just need to try them out on the battlefield.

Warmachine Cryx Battlegroup WIP

A lost post from over a month ago.

Moving on from my color test, I have made progress on a Warmachine Cryx Battlegroup.

Still some detail and the base left to do, but I have mostly completed the rusted and corroded metal and bone elements of these figures. This isn't a out of the box battle group. I swapped one of the dog-like Deathripper bonejack for the crab-like Stalker bonejack.

The base is going to be tricky. building up layers of sequentially lighter tinted water effects with the intent to exaggerate the depth of the water. While I have done that with my swamp terrain, I am concerned about the smaller area and how the water effects with interact with the foliage and aquarium plants.

I am looking forward to getting a in game of Warmachine, so I better get cracking on finishing these up!

FLGS Used Score

I have a new FLGS!

Earlier this year, my FLGS of 30+ years closed its doors. A few weeks ago, my son went to Guardian Games for the first time. They have a huge space and Deathbot and I took our time taking it all in.

We both had a little bit of coin in our pockets and were looking for deals.

I searched through the Warmachine and Warhammer 40K used bins. I found two things of interest:

Warwitch Siren Cryx Solo for $6 (Retail $11.99) and a...

Tau Empire Sniper Drone Team (in metal) for $6 (Retail $41.25). Both were complete un-assembled models (minus packaging)

From the video game section, Deathbot scored:

"Gauntlet Seven Sorrows" for Xbox (the first) for $5 and "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" RPG for Game Boy Advance

All-in-all $21 spent between the two of us and a nice pile of booty taken home.

Warmachine Cryx Color Test 3

Getting closer...

On this go around, I've added more corrosion and rust. I also added a dark wash and highlight to the bone. At this point, I think I am calling it done. All that is left is finishing the base.

I struggled getting the correct white balance from my camera outside. I finally gave up and took these pics with my phone at my workbench.

Warmachine Loot

Scoooooooore!

I just received a recent FleaBay purchase. These figures retail for $165 new and I got them for $40. I am quite stoke about the deal even though there is one figure I can't use. While this lot duplicates some of what I already have, the 2 minis back row and center are ones that I wanted to eventually get. They retail for $55--The entire lot was about 30% of that price!

Granted, some of the figures were sold already broken and a few more broke in transit. But nothing that isn't easy to fix.

I now have enough Cryx to field a 100 point force. Although I have no idea what I am doing, or if I have a cohesive force! :P

Warmachine Cryx Color Test 2

Now I am getting somewhere!

Just a few days ago, I posted my first attempt at my first Warmachine figure. That post was full of firsts as it was also my first time using GW's technical paints Ryza Rust and Nihilakh Oxide. Well I think I have sorted out how to use them. Now I have tried my hand at two more firsts! To get the effects seen below, I used for the first time GW's Typhus Corrosion and FW's Orange Rust powder.

Pictures taken with my phone.

This is exactly how I envisioned it in my head! Just a few more finishing touches before I fill in the 'swamp' with water effects.

I really like how the rust powder added a 3D layer. I inadvertently obliterated all of the 'corrosion' on the brass/copper parts with an orange ink wash that was too intense.

Strange angle, but it shows the inside of the base a little better.

Warmachine Cryx Surprise!

An early Birthday gift?

Adeptus-B surprised me with a small gift last Saturday... A Warmachine Cryx Stalker Bonejack!

It was used, but unpainted and in good shape. The figure was broken off is't base, which was OK as I was going to re-base it anyway!

I grabbed one of my resin 'swamp' bases and experimented with some positions. Nothing looked good. I realized it was how the legs were positioned. So I broke off three of the legs. First, I re-attached the front left leg as if it was raised, about to pierce an enemy.

Then I fiddled with the rear legs. I tried about every position and angle, but still nothing look right. Then I accidentally held up a leg backwards and... That I liked!

Warmachine Cryx Color Test

My first painted Warmachine figure!

My first go 'round was not as successful as I had hoped. I tried the "new" GW technical paints Ryza Rust and Nihilakh Oxide. I need a little more practice with them to get the desired effect. Overall, I'm happy with the concept of black/bone with rusted-metal/corroded-copper.

Warmachine Cryx Starter Set WIP

300th post!!! I am entering into a "new" game!

About 4 years ago, Laertes bought me a Warmachine Cryx starter set. We had plans to give the game a whirl, but like many of our gaming plans, that never came to fruition.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago. Adeptus-B bought himself some Warmachine figures and successfully goaded me into launching into assembling (and painting?) my Cryx force.

2 Warjacks, a Warcaster, and a Solo

Here is how far I got. There are only two more models to complete. Both are Bone-jacks (one identical to the figure on the right, the other a variant of the same).

The mini third from the left is one I picked up on my own about the same time as I received the starter set. I was unable to fit it on one of the resin bases, so I used a plain base with the intent of sculpting texture to match the rest.

Speaking of bases, I am using the "swamp" bases from Kerr & King that I discussed in this post.

As I write this, I have three-and-a-half days before I see Adeptus-B next. I commited to him to finish the last two models and get one test painted by then... wish me luck!

Take care.

Warmachine Khador Color Test

Today we have a guest author...

Hey- Adeptus-B here. I've been curious to ‘dip my feet’ into Privateer Press’ Warmachine skirmish game for some time now, but I never quite worked up the resolve to make the investment. I love the Warjack miniatures, and the combat system sounds fun, but whenever I've had enough ‘mad money’ to sink into a Starter Set (Khador immediately caught my eye), I always found something else that I wanted just a little bit more…

Until now. My favorite local game store is going out of business (r.i.p. Bridgetown), and all of their inventory is on clearance. I was trying to talk myself into taking the plunge with a Khador Starter Set (a Warcaster and two Heavy Warjacks), when I noticed that they still had a ‘Two-Player Battle Box’ available- with the same figs as the Khador Starter, plus a squad of 5 Shocktroopers, a Warmachine Prime Mk II rulebook, and a whole Protectorate of Menoth force (a Warcaster, 2 Heavy Warjacks, 1 Light Warjack, and 5 Cinerators!), plus dice and other odds and ends. Since the clearance price was just over the normal price for the much smaller Starter Set, I decided to take the plunge.

Since Zorcon already has a Cryx Starter Set (a gift from Leartes), I have a future opponent waiting in the wings, and don’t need the Menoth force from the Battle Box. I plan on selling them on Ebay (making the clearance Battle Box an even better buy); Zorcon suggested keeping some of the Cinerator figs to use in our Dark Heresy campaign. They look very cool, but they absolutely tower over GW figs (even Space Marines), so that’s not really an option.

The plastic these figures are made from is not the standard ‘model kit’ plastic that I’m used to (styrene, I think?). It’s much denser- almost the consistency of resin. This gives them impressive weight, but they require super glue to assemble rather than model glue. Since super glue is much more brittle than model glue (which actually ‘melts’ styrene together), I’ll have to be very careful handling these figures- I already snapped an arm off my prototype once so far.

I assembled the Juggernaut first. The figure went together smoothly, but I had a lot of trouble removing the mold lines. Many of them are quite poorly placed, making them difficult to trim or file off- especially around the ‘boiler’ on the back. I added some ‘battle damage’ to the assembled figure with the edge of a file, based on the cover painting of the Battle Box. In hindsight, I wish I would have also added some divets with a drill, representing ballistic impacts.

I shied away from the ‘traditional’ Khador color scheme (red-on-red-on-red), opting instead for a simple camouflage effect that plays up the pseudo-Soviet elements of Khador culture, with red used only for markings. The paint job is pretty straight-forward: primed black, then a dry-brush of gunmetal on the ‘worky-bits'. I then painted the armor plates Scorched Brown (yes, I still use early Citadel Colour terminology), and gave them a heavy dry-brush of Graveyard Earth. I applied a thinned-down wash of Scorched Brown over that, then blended (not my strength) back with more Graveyard Earth. I added a ‘cut’ highlight along the sharp edges, made from a 50/50 mix of Graveyard Earth and Bleached Bone. The ‘snow’ patches were painted in Space Wolf Grey, with white layered on top. I painted the boiler and some parts that were neither gears nor armor with Tinbitz followed by Dwarf Bronze. I added some silver accents to the remaining gunmetal areas, and carefully added silver into the ‘battle damage’ scratches. Since the Juggernaut’s Ice Axe is supposed to generate cold (physics be damned!) I decided to attempt a frost effect on the blade, to distinguish it from the Destroyer’s more conventional Executioner Axe. I stippled a semi-random pattern on the Ice Axe blade with Ice Blue (naturally!), then layered white over that. Finally, I tried to match the base colors to Zorcon’s ‘field’ table. I usually avoid adding flock or static grass to the bases of my figures, but since I added a splattered mud effect to my Warjack’s feet, they needed a dash of green on the base to stand out. Since ‘facing’ has important ramifications in the game mechanics, the rulebook suggests painting indicator marks on the rim of the base. I couldn't find a single example of anyone actually doing this, but, what the heck, I decided to use this as an excuse to add a bit more Khador red to the miniature.

I’m pretty satisfied with the results. I don’t plan on making any big changes to this color scheme on my Destroyer (or any other Khador Warjacks I may pick up in the future). Next up will be a test Shocktrooper. I’m leaning toward a bronze-heavy color scheme.

Now I just have to goad Zorcon into painting his Cryx, and I may actually be ready to play my first game before the year ends…

Resin Bases

I have never used resin bases before, but decided to take the plunge! Recently, I received 2 shipments of resin bases to add to my existing Necromunda gangs. I wound up shopping at 2 different companies to get the styles of bases I was looking for-- Tech-Deck from The Dragon Forge (for my Goliaths) and Scrap Yard from resinfx (for my Scaavys). About a year ago, I also purchased some Swamp resin bases from Kerr & King for a Warmachine Cryx force that Laertes bought me.

On a side note, both The Dragon Forge and resinfx shipped their products relatively quickly (for crossing the pond)-- they arrived in about 11 business days. When I opened the packages, I was pleasantly surprised as both companies sent extra bases (a 60mm base from The Dragon Forge, and five 25mm bases from resinfx).

The Dragon Forge bases are crisp and free of bubbles. The bottom of the bases have not been sanded, but it will be unnecessary as they are already smooth and flat. There is a little bit of very thin "flashing" that easily flakes off with my finger. Overall, these are an excellent product!

A few of the 25mm & 40mm bases from The Dragon Forge
The 60mm "freebie"

The resinfx bases need a little bit of clean up. While the bottoms are sanded flat, the base edge has some "over cast" along the ring that needs to be sanded and/or scraped off. I noticed a few bubbles, but they are very minor. I am very pleased with these bases.

The 25mm "freebies"

The Kerr & King need the most clean-up. The bottoms aren't flat, and will need a fair bit of sanding, and there are multiple bubbles on nearly every base. Also, there is a fair amount of "over cast" on a number of bases. I want to be clear that I do not think these are an inferior product-- they are perfect for my Cryx warband, but in comparison to the other two companies' products, these bases can't be used as-is..

I also ordered a pair of wreck markers from Kerr & King. They have a selection of large and small wreck markers for all (most?) Warmachine factions.
